Woodhaven Spelt Bread Recipe (Easy for Littles!)

WOOD HAVEN BREAD (EASY FOR LITTLES!)-2.png

Have you ever wondered what our sweet kids do after we drop them off in the morning and kiss them goodbye?

Once a week, every week, the kids each make their own bread!!

At drop off, the children come into the classroom, wash their hands (while singing the hand washing song), and then sit down to knead and roll their dough. During Circle Time and Play time, the sweet smell of delicious baking bread fills the cozy classroom. And at snack time, it’s time for each child to enjoy the bread that THEY made.

Baking bread in the morning is so much more than just an activity to ease the drop off experience. It’s important that children begin to participate in an entire process from start to finish. It will grow their reverence for the value of food and hand made things, as well as fosters a connection to the food they eat. The bread they eat at snack is a result of the work (Play) they did earlier that day.

Ready to make this yummy bread at home with your little? Or your big ;)

WOODHAVEN BREAD (EASY FOR LITTLES!)

✨Coconut oil - 1 TBSP
✨Active dry yeast (We use Bob's Red Mill)- 1 TSP
✨Honey- 1 TBSP
Cinnamon (optional) - 1 TSP
✨Spelt Flour (Bob's) - about 1.5 cups
✨Warm water- 1 1/4 cups

1. Take a bowl and mix about 1 1/4 cups of warm water with 1 TBSP of Honey and 1 TBSP of Coconut Oil
Add approximately 1 TSP of yeast (cover the water surface)

2. Mix, then cover with a towel and let it sit out for about 10 minutes. The yeast should start bubbling up. (Your child May like to see this part)

3. Add Cinnamon - 1 TSP and mix in Spelt Flour. Keep adding flour and gently fold into a ball.

4. Let it rise about 5 more minutes or a little longer if you want to see how big your dough gets.

5. Then with a little more flour to reduce stickiness, you can make shapes and buns. (Woodhaven kids like to make “honey pot” holes for the honey drizzle late 😉)

6. Put dough on covered sheets. You can use parchment paper. At school we bake at 375* for about 12 minutes and then switch the trays on the rack for another 2 minutes.

Then you have delicious Woodhaven bread for snack!
