Woodhaven School strives to provide a nurturing and stimulating experience for its students, to foster a lifelong love of learning and exploration, and to promote humanitarianism and environmental awareness.

The school works to cultivate the mind, body, emotions and spirit of each child through an exemplary program emphasizing personal growth, family involvement, nature-based play, creativity, artistic and musical expression, community service, and diversity in peoples, cultures and languages.

We believe that play is a child’s work.

Our Classes

PRESCHOOL (ages 3-6 and potty-trained)
Rosebuds: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 am – 1 pm
Sunflowers and Daisies: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9 am - 1 pm

PARENT & CHILD (birth to age 3)
Sweet Peas Parent & Child Class:
Once per week for two hours

Our preschool classes are a gentle introduction to the daily routines of school life.

For many children, preschool is the first significant time spent away from their parents. A friendly teacher, two parent helpers and a comfortable environment make the children feel at ease. The teacher and helpers work together to facilitate a magical environment where creative, child-driven play is encouraged. Each preschool class has space for 12 students.

There is a focus on socialization with an emphasis on kindness.

Teachers and parent helpers model how to share toys and ideas with one another. The children discuss how their words and actions affect other members of the classroom. They are encouraged to explore and play in small and large groups. As the year progresses, the interactions become more complex and meaningful.

Our program emphasizes humanitarian values and environmental awareness.

Parents of Woodhaven say...

“Woodhaven is aptly named. In a peaceful forested setting, with expansive and colorful classroom space, the place itself promotes nurturing, harmony, and curiosity. Add a dedicated teacher who is truly passionate and good-humored in her approach to young children, and a community of parents who care deeply about both emotional and intellectual development, and the result is an experience that our family will always cherish.” - Parent Tor

Meet Our Teachers

Ms. Erica

I grew up in a small town on the Arizona/Mexico border and my siblings and I played outdoors from sun up ’til sundown in the warm Arizona sunshine. We practically lived in the trees at our mom’s house and when we weren’t outdoors; our talented mother taught us many wonderful skills; knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening and baking.

Ms. Jeannie

I grew up in a small beach community off the coast of Maine. I explored the forests in my neighborhood and the salt marsh canals that encircled our town. Summers were spent riding bikes with my brother and friends through the historic village to the picturesque beaches of the coast. There we swam, collected shells and endlessly played in the sand. During the winter I skied, sledded down hills on toboggans, ice skated and build many snow forts under feet of snow. I spent hours on end playing outside as a child and learned to appreciate all the seasons.

Snack Time

Woodhaven provides students with healthy, sugar-free, wholesome foods at snack time. During meals, students and adults gather together, family style, around a large table, creating a cozy, home-like environment.

Nature Play

Woodhaven children spend about half of each school day outdoors, regardless of the weather. Our outdoor classroom is in the woods, where children experience a combination of free play and facilitated activities such as nature walks, games, bug hunts, bird watching and plant identification. A portion of our outdoor space is a garden, maintained by the children and the parent gardening coordinator. Sunflower and Daisy classes spend the entire school day outdoors on Wednesday (or ‘Woods-day Wednesday’ as we lovingly call it). Learning outdoors helps develop the children’s sense of wonder for nature. They learn to question their world, make observations, and seek understanding.
